Best Films and Worst of 2008

Last year was a good year for film in that there were a number of films that really made an impact on me and huge audiences. I never get a chance to see all of the them but here were my choices for the best films and worst disappointments on the morning of the Golden Globe awards.

Top 5 Films of 2008
1. The Wrestler
terrific characters in a gritty, moving story about how you abuse your body for the crowd

2. Wall-E
a lovable Chaplinesque robot in an important and relevant animation

3. The Dark Knight
a modern noir with a brilliant performance in the Joker

4. Slumdog Millionaire
the feel bad/feel good movie of the year with a strong story set in the slums of India

5. Shine A Light
Scorsese allows the audience to be in the Rolling Stones for 2 hours

Top 5 Film Disappointments of 2008
(not the worst- remember these films could have been great but...)
1. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
an interesting gimmick and good story but it cheeses out with overly obvious symbolism

2. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
this is why you don't do drugs kids.. why not just have Superman fly in and have a sandwich

3. Be Kind Rewind
loved the previews and the recreations of films but the film doesn't gel

4. 21
cheap and obvious- we've seen this story before but this time they play blackjack

5. Wanted
most irritating film of the year- it's the Matrix with professional killers and bending bullets
